Grounded
Qualitative analysis that shows you what your theory is missing.
Grounded treats a qualitative theory as a structure: categories as classes, incidents as instances, typed relations backed by evidence. Because the theory has a shape, the software can show you which categories lack properties, which relations lack evidence, and produce the methodological audit your committee will ask for.11Strauss, A. & Corbin, J. (1998). Basics of Qualitative Research: Techniques and Procedures for Developing Grounded Theory (2nd ed.). Sage.
What it does
- Theory as a schema
- Categories, properties, dimensions and relations are first-class objects, each linked to the passages that ground it.
- Methods as profiles
- Grounded theory is the first profile. Discourse analysis, narrative or phenomenological approaches can be loaded as their own profiles, with their own vocabulary and quality criteria.
- An audit trail you can hand in
- Generate a methodological report from the actual trace of your analysis instead of reconstructing it from memory.
- Readable by your agent
- The whole study lives in text files, so your AI agent can read, query and annotate it without a proprietary API.
The method behind it
Built on the grounded theory of Anselm Strauss and Juliet Corbin.
Grounded follows the vocabulary of open, axial and selective coding, and the questions Strauss and Corbin say a researcher must be able to answer about how a theory was reached. It is designed for studies large enough to repay learning a tool; for ten interviews and a short report, a word processor is better advice.
Who it is for
- Doctoral students doing grounded theory
- Funded research teams that must document their analysis
- Teachers of qualitative methods
