zotero-agent

Full local control of your Zotero library, from your terminal or your AI agent.

Zotero's local API is read-only, so most tools write through the web API, which needs an account, a key and sync. zotero-agent writes locally through a small token-protected bridge plugin: search, bulk-edit metadata, tag, deduplicate, import by DOI, ISBN or arXiv, and summarize PDFs into notes.1Zotero's local HTTP API only reads. Writing usually goes through the zotero.org web API, with an account, a key and sync.

What it does

Read and write, locally
Search, bulk-edit metadata, deduplicate, import by DOI, export and build PDF outlines, all undoable. No account, no API key, no cloud.
Four ways in
A zot command line, an MCP server, a Claude Code skill and portable AGENTS.md instructions.
Free and open source
Licensed under AGPL-3.0 and published on PyPI.

The method behind it

The same idea as every heuretika instrument: your library stays on your machine, and your agent gets good tools.

zotero-agent is free because it is useful on its own, and because it is how many people first meet heuretika.

Who it is for

  • Zotero users with large libraries
  • Researchers who use Claude Code, Codex or other agents
